2D or 3D?

Postby Thoul » Tue Jul 24, '07, 2:58 am

There are still a few 2D games coming out these days, but most of them seem to be re-releases of older games or only on handheld systems like the DS. Do you prefer playing 2D games, like the classics, or 3D games, like most of the new ones released today, and why?

I think they both still serve a purpose, although I feel more and more that 2D is becoming obsolete. I can't think of a good argument to keep it around. Games like Skies of Arcadia and the Halo series really show off the benefits of having more degrees of freedom of movement. I can get immersed even deeper in a game that surrounds the character with scenery rather than gives a birds-eye view.

For me.. for example with Sonic, it's 2D all the way.
And again, with Mortal Kombat, it just has to be 2D.

However.. Mario's 3D versions have been quite decent ^^ So it ain't all one sided.

So.. I guess.. it depends on the game. not much use am I?

I'm with DD; it depends on the game. Sonic just isn't the same in 3D. Some things, like RPGs and platformers, can be really great in 3D. But others are just meant to be 2D. Like, I haven't seen a car related or racing game that is much different in 3D than it would have been in 2D.

There do seem to be less and less 2D games now. Even the handhelds are going 3D now.

I prefer 2D, purely because growing up that's the type of game I've played the most. Not to mention, I love old school stuff -- never get tired of the classics.

As far as 3D goes... It's fun too, but as others before me have said, it depends on the game, mostly. :D

I forgot about my old 2D fighters... after playing Streets of Rage and Street Fighter 2, I couldn't see fighters as a 3D genre. I actually liked being confined to that space and not having to chase my opponent all over the battle arena.

The Komrade just reminded me of some 2D fighting games I used to play with my younger brother. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters is one of them, very long name. It was fun pinning him against the side with Shredder, though he'd get ticked off and tell me to knock it off...

I miss the old 2d-sonics.. even though they are stored underneath my bed! 0_0
I was never able to get into any of the 3d- sonics. Did not feel the same, nor did it hook me into playing.

I felt the same with the Ecco the dolphin games. DOTF was good, but not the same compared to the previous 2-d games. The 2-d tribute levels DOTF did have was pretty neat as I remember them.

The last 2d-game I really enjoyed was Castlevania:SOTN.

I know how you feel. I have only one 3D sonic game which is good because you can unlock the classic 2D Sonic games from Gamegear. I also like how they have the physics set up unlike the newer Sonic 3D games where you run mega fast in 2 seconds.
