Meet Seth

Postby Thoul » Mon Sep 1, '08, 8:16 am

This is the second part of Seth's introduction to the group. One thing I always found interesting about this character is that he is designed to look older than everyone else in the game, except for the elderly like Holt or Raja. The extra lines on his face, particularly under his eyes, show that he is not as young as the others (or young looking, in the case of the androids). This is the best close up we get of the character in the entire game.

Heck, he’s only 39, which is not that old. I prefer to think that his wrinkles are due to his dark outlook on life (pun intended). I certainly don’t intend to have lines or wrinkles if and when I reach that age. And no, I'm not a fan of cosmetic surgery either. A healthy diet and happy outlook should suffice. :)

You have a point there. His... negative.. approach to living is probably a large part of this.

This may prove that a 30-40 year old guy is old in PS creator's view. So, Rune and Alys may have less than 30's.

I agree with Srijita when you think about it 39 isn't that old at all he'd only be like ten years older than Rune (rune looks around 29 or so).

It's not that old, true, but it is older than the others, excepting the androids. Adding extra lines on the face is a common way of making characters look older in animation. It would be good if we had someone else of the same age frame to compare it, too, but I don't think we do.

Seth is an "archaeologist", and those lines could always be chalked up to sun damage while out on digs (I don't think SPF is for sale on Motavia). Still, 39 isn't that old, and besides - slight age makes a scholar "distinguished"! (For men, anyway. Women with slight age don't get to look "distinguished". Where's teh fairness, huh!? )

I agree with Lucas that Rune is 29/30-ish (and that better be young because I'm twenty-eight). :D

[face=Times New Roman]If you look around, there is considerable variation in the general population. Some guys develop male pattern baldness in their twenties; others have a full head of hair into their seventies. Many women keep their looks well past the age of 50. Just look at Catherine Deneuve! My grandmother’s in her seventies and doesn’t have a single wrinkle. Hope I’ve inherited some of her genes.

I’d say it was a combination of genetics, attitude, and taking care of yourself. Moisturisers with high SPF don’t hurt either. *winks at Rune_Walsh*

Just out of curiosity, do you see Seth as: (1) a real archaeologist, born of human parents, who was possessed by Dark Force or (2) a transient manifestation of Dark Force in human form?

I tend subscribe to the latter view. :)

I tend to place Rune in his mid-thirties, for a number of reasons that would probably bore everyone. The only point I’ll make here is this: the best military outfits include people from a broad age-range. Young people in their teens and early 20s have unmatched energy and physical stamina. However, career officers aged 40 and over are equally invaluable for their knowledge and experience. Eisenhower, for example, was in his 50s when he served as the Allied Supreme Commander in Europe; I doubt a younger man could have supervised the France/ Germany campaigns so well. People in their 30s tend to fall somewhere in between, combining some of the energy of youth with some of the experience of age. But no single age-group is ideal for such operations; everyone’s contribution is necessary.

The Protectors are not a military outfit, but they are nonetheless fighting a war of sorts. Excluding the androids, let’s look at the age range: Chaz Ashley is 16; Rika is 1; Hahn Mahlay is 24; Gryz is 19; Kyra Tierney is 18. The only exception is Raja, who is in his 80s (which is apparently middle-aged for Dezolians). To balance the party, one really needs some team-members who are in their 30s or older.

I realise that video games are often targeted at a teenage market, and tend to portray anyone over 25 as dead weight  , but it would be much more realistic to have some experience on board when fighting the epitomisation of evil.

Just my 2 cents :)

The latter, definitely... but he looked the part. ;)

I have to say I agree. I believe that, at his youngest, Rune is in his late twenties, but you have a very good point. I wondered about his outift. Why did Kyra not recognize that Rune was a higher esper? Rune's style of dress was very formal, I think, and gave off the impression that he was a character of importance. Just my wonderings, anyway...

I always saw Alys as Chaz's (adoptive) elderly sister more than his (adoptive) mother. That's one of the aspects that makes me think she has no more than 14 years of difference from him.

This is probably wrong, but at least I can show +/- my idea of ages in PSIV
