Next week on 1UP.com Retronauts..

..they're doing an episode about Phantasy Star.

Retronauts is one of the 1UP.com podcasts, as the name implies it's dedicated to retro gaming. They're bi-weekly so the Phantasy Star episode won't be out until the 14th.

Here's the homepage for the podcast: http://www.1up.com/do/minisite?cId=3156908

Here's the info on how to pass along your Phantasy Star memories: http://boards.1up.com/zd/board/message?board.id=games&thread.id=576461

I vote we all listen and discuss when it comes out :)

That sounds like a great idea! Thanks for telling us about it. I'm usually not much of one for podcasts, but I'll have to make an exception for this one. :D

If you can get past the language, it's a pretty decent discussion. Fast forward to the 13 minute mark if you only want to hear the Phantasy Star section (which runs about 1 hour).

They definitely showed knowledge and appreciation for the series. Two of the guys on there were clearly fans and had some good points. My favorite part was when they talked about calling the Sega tip line and getting sent the printed out Phantasy Star walkthrough (which I also did: http://www.psalgo.com/bb/did-you-buy-them-new-or-used-vt559.html) They were much easier on PSIII than I expected, seemed to be big fans of the generational system.

I thought it was interesting that they assumed everyone died at the end of PSII. I know it's an oft discussed topic but they breezed right over it. Prior to that they talked about the Tiem storyline which seems to be what they based the ending on - taking it as an overall dark theme for the game.

The PSO save glitch discussion was funny, I never knew Sega offered a free "power up" for people who had corrupted games.

I'm a bit late in downloading it, but I wanted to wait until I had my shiny new broadband connection up and running. It was a pretty good show. They went a bit overboard with the language at times and showed a lack of research on the side games (at least they knew of them, that's something!), but it was a nice commentary.

Yeah, they really seemed to view the whole game as having that really dark theme from Tiem's story. There were themes of hope in the game as well, but those didn't get mentioned.

I found it funny that they said PSO wasn't as bad about wiping data on dial-up as it was on broadband. It's probably true, but just ironic. When I tried to play on dial-up, I could rarely stay connected for long periods, much less long enough to get up to level 100 or whatever. I never did lose my data, though.

I haven't listened to this yet, but if they were talking about the double save, then it's true. Sega added a second save when you join a game to prevent a dupe method. So basically the game saved 2 times in a row when you join game, and occasionally the second save would start while the first save was still going, causing the corruption, and causing the game to freeze.

It wasn't really a problem on dialup, but the slow connection speed meant that there was more lag between the first save ending, and the second save beginning.
