Probably, you're right ! But about the chip, is it possible to emulate as it is or is it necessary to have a special emulator ?

No special emulator needed. Any modern computer can effortlessly brute force an SNES game. As for repro carts, you just need a donor cart that has the chip. I think a common title for that is Stunt Race.

So we actually found one over the weekend at GameStop, of all places. Certainly snatched it right up, and they had 2 in stock. Going to say it's a neat novelty piece of hardware for sure. The controllers are nice (though I don't know why Nintendo makes the cables so short...we ordered extenders that should arrive today), and feel like real SNES controllers. The menu interface is neat, pretty easy to navigate, but more to explore than you'd think outright. The selection of games installed by default is good, and I'm certainly delighted EarthBound is one of the included games! Has most of the titles you'd think of, with probably the most notable omissions being Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3, likely due to licensing issues over Dixie Kong. It beats emulating at a computer, and of course you can plug it into any modern TV.

And within a day we naturally hacked it. Not very difficult, and now it's loaded with other emulators and tons more ROMs from many systems, including more SNES games. Of course I loaded the original Mother and Mother 3 (translated) onto it, including the Mother 25th anniversary hack. We also ordered a wireless controller that arrived yesterday, and it was a pretty impressive little chunk of hardware! Felt like a real SNES controller, no noticeable latency.

Ah ! The "famous" cables so short ! It was the same for the NES Mini and it's absolutely beyond understanding... :o
Thank you for the review and.. I was sure that you were going to be happy to have Earthbound/Mother inside ! ;)

Well now it's loaded with all 3 games in the Mother trilogy - with two represented by multiple versions! The original (translated) Mother, the 25th anniversary hack, the very familiar Earthbound, a rom hack of Earthbound that tries to closely resemble Mother 2 as it can (things got changed other than just the language during the localization) and of course the translated Mother 3 rom. We set up a Google drive to put in more rooms to upload, because the hack tool is limited to one PC because of how it works.

So far on this I've beaten the original Mario Bros, Lost Levels, and Super Mario World.

To be fair I didn't know about the 25th anniversary hack or the Earthbound to Mother 2 conversion hack until I went looking for roms to load onto the thing.

Anyway, today, when I find myself in need of a few minutes brain break between some work stuff, I'm going to put roms in our Google drive.

So I noticed that our local Walmart has one of these gaming sytems in their weekly sales ad. Thinking about buying one even though we still have our old original. Thanks for all the reviews above. Still haven't quite made up my mind.
