I know there's a large Phantasy Star fandom in Brazil; I hope they're all enjoying their day off. Tiradentes sounds like a really interesting man, but what an absolutely brutal way of dying. It's amazing what people have done in the name of freedom.

Liberdade!

If you go back and read the more revisionist history books (like I did when I was studying for the college entry exam), authors are actually quite critical of Tiradentes. He was involved in pro-Brazil activities, but supposedly denied he was after capture until finally being convinced to take the rep for everything and be martyred.

There was actually another movement based in the state of Bahia where the participants were far more willing to die for their beliefs (i.e. an independent Brazil), but are often times brushed over in favor of Tiradentes.
