Ohhhh now I know what you mean. The older Castlevania games where you get locked to the staircases and you then move too slow to dodge enemies, and you can't jump. I remeber that.

Hate is a big big word to describe random encounters in RPG ! I can totally play RPG's with random encunters battles but I prefer when you can see your (future ?) opponents ! (if you want to battle them ! ;) )
About Castlevania : YES ! I can (alas) remember it too ! :(

Random encounters never really bothered me. I grew up with them, but they aren't really relevant anymore. Random encounters probably came about due to hardware and software limitations. Games not being able to render the extra objects on the screen. The limitations are no longer there, so it doesn't make much sense, unless a developer is going for a nostalgic feeling for their game.

In fact, I prefer non random encounters BUT random encounters didn't disturb me :! A proof ? I have two !
First, the Phantasy Stars ! I've played quasi all of the games in the serie and absolutely no problem !
Second, Bravely Default, all the fights are random and no problem as the game is great :)
