The Manga Thread

Postby Tanith » Sat Jun 5, '10, 3:17 am

Lucas's Claymore thread got me interested in starting a manga thread. I generally prefer manga over anime; I have more time to read than I do watch TV, though there are some really good anime adaptions out there (Chrono Crusade comes to mind). Plus, I prefer the manga format, anyway. You get a better feel for the artistry and I'm not always a fan of how the characters are voiced (both Japanese and English).

What do you read/have you read? Which are your favorites? Which ones did you end up not liking or just didn't interest you? Is there a certain type of story/setting/character you like best?

Discuss! Feel free to add your own thoughts and comments and ignore my own questions. This thread is about any thoughts you might have about manga.

I'll answer my own questions in another post.

What do you read/have you read?
Death Note, Claymore, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, Chrono Crusade

Which are your favorites?
Death Note, Bleach and Claymore

Which ones did you end up not liking or just didn't interest you?
I tried to read Naruto, but I don't care for it (don't shoot me; I know how popular it is).

Is there a certain type of story/setting/character you like best?
Shonen stuff, but I prefer adult characters, which can be hard to find. It's dominated by high school characters, and I realize I'm not the target demographic. Oh well. I tolerate the high school settings of Death Note and Bleach because the writing is so good.

I don't mind gore and violence or themes about death, though all the vampire stuff makes me roll my eyes. Enough with the vampires, already.

I generally can't stand chibi anything, though its occasional use for comedic purposes is fine. Drama and romance are generally meh for me.
------------------------------------------------------
Pretty much the above list is all I've read. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

What do you read/have you read?Claymore, Ragnarok, +Anima, Bleach, Negima, Shrine of the Morning Mist, Naruto, Digimon, Street Fighter: Ryu and a few others too

Which are your favourites?
Claymore and Street Fighter of course

Which ones did you end up not liking or just didn't interest you?
Naruto (I liked the anime, but I didn’t get into the manga side of it), Digimon (the same as I said about Naruto). I also don’t tend to go for romance or drama style manga, but I did enjoy some of Negima but more so for the comedy. I prefer action and fantasy, sci-fi setting manga over other genres.

A manga thread, finally

Thanks Tanith :beg_wily: :beg_wily: :beg_wily: :beg_wily:

What do you read/have you read?
I have read One Piece (I'm waiting each week for the next chapter on internet), Naruto (same thing), Death Note (finish), Berserk, Soul Eater, yu-gi-oh manga, Fairy tail etc...

Which are your favorites?
One Piece is the Best Manga I have ever Read. Eiichiro Oda (sama) Power

Which ones did you end up not liking or just didn't interest you?
I really loved Naruto but in a moment, the story just get less interesting. But the original naruto (not Shipuuden) is really great (manga and not anime).
Is there a certain type of story/setting/character you like best?
For this question: I'll tell some of my favorite character:

One Piece : Trafalgar Law
Naruto : Kakashi Hatake
Death Note : L (He's really cool =D)
Yu-gi-oh : Marik (evil power)

I'll end my list like this. ^^

He's one of my favorite characters, too.

I'm thinking of starting "Trinity Blood." Anyone read it? Is it worth my time? It's sort of vampire-related, right? (Blech.) However, it's post-apocalyptic, which is one of my favorite sci-fi settings (dystopia being my other favorite setting. Gee, I sure do love those happy-go-lucky stories, don't I? ).

I think you'd really like Death Note, RW. I haven't seen the anime, so I can't compare it to the manga, but Death Note is my favorite manga. It's wonderfully written and illustrated.

If you like post-apocalyptic manga Tanith, might I suggest Highschool Of The Dead, Biomeat - Nectar, and Psyren.

What do you read/have you read? Which are your favorites?
I answered this good enough for now previously, both questions that is.

Which ones did you end up not liking or just didn't interest you?

They were so insignificant that I forgot what they were called... sorry. But don't worry, there was only two.

Is there a certain type of story/setting/character you like best?
Well, I like Shounen, a few Shoujo I read, Seinen, Supernatural, Martial-Arts, Action, etc, types of manga.

I do tend to read really weird manga though. A good example is Aria the Scarlet Ammo (Hidan no Aria). It's about this guy who turns into a "super mode" when stimulated by a certain "something" as the description describes it. =P

A certain something, huh? :eyebrow:

Thank you for the recommendations! I'm always on the prowl for new stories. They're not really available in the libraries here, so I have to preview them in the bookstores and then buy them and hope the series continues to be good.
