Chapter 6 : What news?

It was busy in the barracks. Many soldiers were rushing around, getting things in order for the mission. Some were loading up equipment, while others were loading up weapons into cases for travel. The private hurried his way down the airstrip towards the one building that stood separate from the barracks. Stopping in front of the door the private showed the guards his credentials then hurried inside. On the outside the building looked the same but on the inside, the private noted, it all the amenities that one who achieved the rank of colonel could ask for. Many different Vid screens cycled various scenes of Motavia. The private paused for a moment at one to watch it change from lush green landscape to barren wasteland. Not wanting to be verbally berated by his CO, the private scurried his way down the hallway to the large double doors at the end. These doors were a stark contrast to the opulent surrounds with their militaristic look. He waited a moment to catch his breath then stepped inside. He was greeted with the sounds of a command center with technicians rushing to and from computer terminals and data banks. A few of the higher ups were directing traffic and pouring thoughts into maneuvers and tactics over simulated battles. However, these were not his charges and he headed right into the mix towards a door off towards the northeastern part of the room. Placing a hand on the palm sized screen he waited for the scan to execute. After a moment of standing still the scan was finished and the door opened with the sound of air rushing through the cracks. Stepping in, the private had to wait a moment for his eyes to adjust and began his walk in the dark. It only took a few steps before he reached his goal and entered one final door. The light was a little less dim, but not enough for the private to really make out what was in here. He looked around for a moment, unsure if he was in the wrong area but a gruff voice alerted him that he was in the correct place. Quickly standing at attention he awaited the chance to speak.

"Do you have some information, private?" the gruff voice said, emphasizing private.

"Yes sir!"

"Well?" the irritation in the voice was evident and caused the private to swallow hard. Biting back his fear he continued :

"Sir! The target has been acquired and contact was made, sir!"

"Excellent." the voice seemed to sound a bit more darker this time, almost as if it were salivating for more news. "Was the test successful?"

"Sir! Test was implemented and completed without fail. The subject indicated all the signs as shown in preliminary testing."

"Good....Have the subject followed, but do not make any more contact until my order"

"Sir! Yes Sir!"

"What of the preparations for the, anomaly, we picked up earlier?"

"Sir! Preparations are underway and on schedule. We will be departing from base within the hour."

"Perfect. See that my personal craft is loaded up and ready to go within thirty minutes. I want to see what the survey team has found."

"Sir! Yes sir!"

"Dismissed!"

The private saluted to, what he suspected, was the colonel then departed quickly out the way he came. After the private left the colonel pondered on the information for a moment. Although unseen, his eyes began to glow red as the anticipation grew within him, emitting a deep, dark laughter. Soon his planning would come to fruition and he would be the first to find the missing secret that has eluded Algo for centuries. Smiling to himself he pressed a button on the arm of his chair and clasped his hands together as the chair lowered itself downwards to his hidden hangar.
