This is something I always pondered; Why did Seed self-destruct?
What exact purpose did it serve?

All the systems on Motavia were out of control, and the monsters were coming from his facility, so he tried to stop it the only way he could at that point.
(Or that's what I gathered from my re-reading of that part of the script, anyway.)

Yeah, that is what I recall from that part of the game too - to stop anymore monsters from being generated. Although I suppose you could definitely debate the effectiveness, as monster populations remained pretty abundant afterwards.
Last finished Pokémon game: Shield
Other games: Skyrim Special Edition (Switch), Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Switch & PS4), Okami (Switch & PS4)
Other gaming goals: completing a Living Pokedex (minus some event Pokes) and going through at least 1 game per generation

For me too, this explanation is the good one : to stop the monsters coming from the place where he was.Yes, it doesn't seem to had a lot of effects, but we can imagine that some monsters were already there (on the planets) and that some other facilities were breeding monsters ?
