Many many reasons, where to start...

I draw most of this from occasionally lurking at smash boards and playing with tournament people at school.

Reason 1: tier lists. They rate the characters from best to worst.

There are a few reasons I dislike this. For one, this is the reason that tournaments inevitably decline into 3-5 viable characters to play competitively. Melee tournaments have more or less become festivales of Marth, Falco, Fox and Sheik.

WOO, getting cheered for!

Another reason...tier list is self-reinforcing. Competitive players, no matter their play/style preferences, in order to win, have to start using the high-rated characters. Thus, more weird/advanced/cheap techniques are discovered for them, everyone else is left in the dust.

I don't mean ALL competitive players in saying this, but the ones I know...

And from what I can gather lurking at smash boards sometimes.

Yup. He's rated pretty high, which is probably why.

Also, the other reason I hate the tier list is that my roommate and best friend likes to play Meta Knight just for fun, who is apparently banned at tourneys. So when she wants to play him, the competitive players whine at her even though we're just playing for fun

No, they ban some characters. I guess at big tourneys, Meta Knight is banned and I THINK Falco is getting considered for that too.

Yes. That's one reason the competitive smash community bugs me. Tier lists and banning characters.

Second reasons...stages.

Lurking at smash boards and playing with competitive players, you'd think smashville, battlefield, yoshi's island and final destination were the only stages in the game.

Banning the use of specific characters, now that's just pathetic.
