The Daytona 500 is being held today, Sunday, February 16, 2020. The Grand Marshal this year is US President Donald Trump. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will take a lap around the track in their car known as "The Beast" before the race begins.
I read yesterday afternoon that the race had been postponed until Monday because of heavy rains they were having. I think they had to stop it mid-way or something. Anyway I haven't read anything about it today yet but will post who the winner is when I found out something. A shame they had to postpone it with the large crowd and the US President there, but those things happen.
If anything, it was The weather that was stupid, lol. I mean come on the President is there and the weather decides to rain and they have to postpone the whole event.
Anyway, I read today that someone named Denny Hamlin (I think that is his name) won the race. However, another driver was almost at the finish line when he had a very, very bad wreck and smashed his car, etc. He was taken to hospital and I read today that he is now awake, etc., so hopefully he will be well soon. Another well known race car driver, Dale Earnhardt, Sr., had a similar wreck a few years ago and lost his life there.
Race made it to about lap 20 when they rains came in and wouldn't let up. Last time this happened was back in 12. So it's not unheard of.
Hamlin won the race on a second over time try. For the most part the race was pretty tame which is typical. Most time it is with in the last twenty laps when all heck breaks lose. Which is pretty much what happened when they had the usual "big one" wreck that took out about half the cars and most of the front runners.
Newman was in the lead when he got sideways. Kissed the wall and then went into the air where he hit another car and then landed and skidded for about 1000 feet or so. I've seen a lot of wrecks in NASCAR and this one was one of the most scary I've seen. Honestly thought Newman was a goner. But you have to figure though that the cars have come a long way. Twenty years ago when Earnhart got killed the cars did not have the same level of protection they do now. So if Newman had crashed like this back then? Instant fatal. In this case? Grace of God Newman walked out of the hospital about two days later.
Also of note: Earnhart went head on into the side of a concrete wall. Their was nothing that absorbed the energy from that. Combined with the lack of proper gear in the car it pretty much snapped his neck.
