Oh, boy, am I happy to hear this!
About a week or so ago, Lucasfilm said that they were going to sit down and make an official canon to Star Wars, and here it is:
The Phantom Menace > Attack of the Clones > The Clone Wars (TV Series) > Revenge of the Sith > Star Wars: Rebels (TV Series, only here because I don't know when it takes place) > A New Hope > The Empire Strikes Back > Return of the Jedi > Episode VII Plus any movies, comic books, TV shows, novels, or video games that are released starting now.
On the one hand, I'm a bit upset because this means Darth Revan, Meetra Surik (the Jedi Exile, and the only female customizable protagonist to be canon), Kyle Katarn, Dash Rendar, Mara Jade, the World Devastators from Dark Empire, and Jaina Pure Awesomeness Solo are now no longer canon, as is the extremely crappy Thanksgiving special that people have an unhealthy attachment towards, as well as the completely epic rockstar way Chewbacca dies (the Yuuzhan Vong dropped a planet on him, and he spent the last minute of his life looking up at it, arms open, daring it to come and get him.)
But, since the entire Expanded Universe is now firmly relegated to "officially licensed fanfiction, ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEEL" territory, I'm quite happy to report that the stupid nature of Meetra's death (decapitated because why the hell not), T3-M4's death in the same novel (completely disintegrated at the molecular level), Mara Jade's equally stupid and random death (stabbed in the stomach with a poison dart by her ingrate nephew, which no Force power can cure because ______), Jacen Solo turning into Darth Caedus for absolutely no apparent reason whatsoever, that one Ewok who learned Basic and joined Rogue Squadron so he could fly an X-Wing (...really. This actually happened.), and Skippy the Already Noncanon Force-Sensitive Droid are firmly no longer a part of the Star Wars series.
......Tragically, this also means that since The Clone Wars is canon, that whole part with Darth Maul surviving getting cut in half and becoming a creature that's half-Zabrak and half-Radio Shack is canon, as is the bane of the series that is Ahsoka Tano. Ugh. Is it wrong of me to shout "SHOOT HER!! SHOOT AHSOKA FIRST!!!" at the TV?
