Giant Hornets

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Mon May 4, '20, 9:30 am

Hornets as big as 2 inches that may have originated in Asia are now in the USA. These things look scary! They are a problem for bees and humans as well.

They've been living in Asia for a long time. The problem is that Asian honeybees have a defense mechanism against them (they swarm an invading hornet, enclose it in a ball, and start beating their wings to generate heat and basically cook it to death), but European honeybees that dominate here in the United States do not have this behavior. So yeah, this is a problem. Who knows how they got here...probably a few got stuck in a cargo ship or something that docked in Washington and they escaped.

A nest for these Giant Hornets has been found in Washington State in the USA! Someone captured some of the hornets and they put tracking devices on them so they could find out where they returned to their nests. Now they have permission from the property owner to destroy the nest, even if it means getting rid of the tree (which is a very real possibility, I think).

The Hornet nest above has been destroyed. The insects were vaccummed out of the tree. The tree has also been cut. Searches are still on for other possible nests in the area and elsewhere.

Very bad! Invasive species (Not just these hornets) are an issue throughout and can wipe out the natural order in an area.
All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.

Some Queen Bees or Queen Hornets were found in the tree that was destroyed:

So glad they caught these and hope it helps somewhat in getting rid of these things.
