Shining In The Darkness

Remembering the games of yesteryear.

Shining In The Darkness

I've been playing this game quite frequently in addition to Sonic 2, Sonic & Knuckles, Phantasy Star II and Phantasy Star III ever since I got Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. It's not bad, although I'm wondering if there's a better, less tedious walkthrough for it out there other than the one I'm using, which is by the guy who's walkthroughs for Phantasy Star II and III have really helped me out in both those games, but I think his SITD walkthrough is really exaggerated though. Anyway, I like the graphics and the music, and there's some pretty funny moments in the game too, like when Pyra is arguing with Old Vik, and when she puts a slow down spell on that one guy. XD This game's also available on the Wii Virtual Console, which I should buy for it. And I still don't have Sonic 2, Sonic & Knuckles, Phantasy Star II or Phantasy Star III on my VC, and I gotta get those too.

I tried the game a while back on one of the collections and just couldn't get into it. I suppose I was expecting something more like Shining Force. It did seem quite easy to get lost in it without a walkthrough, but I never looked one up.

Shining in the Darkness was my first Shining game (which is a good thing since it's the first one made). It was also the first dungeon-crawler with a first-person view I ever played. When I was young, I remember playing it with my cousin. We were renting the game non-stop, casting the spell to see part of the map, and then drawing every map of every floor. When we finally defeated Darksol, cry of joy were heard from us. I have a lot of nostalgia for this game, which is why I downloaded it on VC, and still managed to love it...In this game, I even leveled all 3 characters to 99, so that I could buy all the secret items that I didnt know existed during my youth. For those with a lot of patience, and who love old-school dungeon-crawl RPG, this is a great title...only to be beaten later by Shining The Holy Ark, but that's another story :)

Man I LOVED Shining the Holy Ark. One of the best RPG's on the Saturn [next to PDS that is ]. I wish they'd make another Shining game like that and one like the original's.

I think the game was nice, with so big and complex caves that they made PS ones a piece of cake. Luckily I was always good at memorizing the mazes, so I didn't waste too much time playing it.
I remember I liked the graphics and the few scenes.
But the best part of it is that it was the first installment of the Shining Force series, which is superb.
A person only sees and hears what he wants to see and hear and disregards the rest.
