So... people were cooking in a robe and didn't think, "I should be careful to not catch my robe on fire"? Sometimes, I wonder if anyone has any common sense any more.

Yeah, basically. Robes generally have somewhat dangly sleeves, and cooking with dangly clothing is a bad idea. Call it Darwin in action at times, cold as that is. Common sense, like intelligence, seems to be a limited resource that is getting stretched thin as the human population grows.

There's nothing cold about common sense. People wonder why I have a short temper and it's because I have an issue with stupid things like this when they're fairly obvious [clearly there are some things you just don't know but this..... :bang: ]. If that's the case then all clothes should be recalled since they can catch on fire. Of course if that's true then we need to recall fire since, lord knows, it causes death! Who would've thunk it..... :x

Really, even though it does seem to be dangerous, I can see where a lot of women, especially elderly ladies, might be cooking while wearing a robe. Maybe they don't get dressed during the day due to sickness, not feeling well, or just want to be more comfortable, etc. I don't recall if these robes were flame retardant or not, but even that wouldn't help much if it caught on fire good I guess. I think it's a case of just not realizing or knowing better in some instances. Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call.
