It is such a beautiful story, augmentedfourth. We can see it comes from someone who has the same love for music as Ustvestia. I share the same feeling, as I am a musician myself. I love the way you, focusing on arts, draw parallels with the sad state of the whole Algolian society at those times.

I don´t know if that was the intention, but the story sounds to me like a well-deserved stab in the plastic music we see nowadays.

With such good stories as the last ones, I think I´ll have to remove my fanfics for the site to keep the high standards :p

Excellent story!

I love music, especially the Piano, and this story really touched my heart and soul. Music can be so many things to so many people, but I believe you touched on it best, with the "hope". Your descriptions of the people without the music in their lives rings true of people everywhere, I believe.

Excellent writing! :)

Whoops, things get buried in this forum quickly! Thanks for the reviews!

I've probably mentioned that my fiancé and I lost our music teaching jobs at the end of last school year due to budget cuts and the state of the economy. He eventually got a new job, but we still don't know if he'll be safe in September. Nearly every music teacher we know is losing their jobs next school year. I usually try to avoid political discussion and getting on my soapbox, but this is happening now. Arts education is being denied to the current generation of school-aged children in the US, and then what?

I do admit to being a bit of a "silver lining" person, so at least it leads to good fanfic? *shrug* :p

SS1, the piano was my first instrument and I still love it so, so much, but somewhere down the line I decided I wanted to be a band teacher. Piano still comes in handy, though. Everyone should play the piano, at least for a few years!

Sad to hear that. Here music was much overlooked in the past decades. Now they are trying to teach music again in the schools, but it is mostly useless as nobody learns anything in public schools (people leave the high school illiterate).

Beautifully-written story. The fact that you are a musician yourself makes it easier for you to become Ustvestia, doesn't it? I can tell that you pour your feelings and emotions into the man and that his feelings are much you're own. It always makes our writings more beautiful when we do it that way, doesn't it? I need to listen to some classic music now. :)

Fan fiction narratives are something I've not seen a lot of. Mainly because I read little fan fiction. :p So it was nice to see a narrative written for a support character this time, if someone you meet only once can be classed as such. Anyway.

This was very well written. I can see you obviously put a lot of your own feeling into this one, that's for sure. The story reminds me of a conversation I seem to come back to every now and then. Mainly, how it seems this generation are becoming disinterested with anything that requires effort and rewards incredibly well, in exchange for convenience and minimal effort. But I won't go there, this isn't the place and I'm sure a lot of us share the same sentiment. :D

Anyway, needless to say, you did well showing the life of someone such as this in the world of PS II. I never gave it much thought at the time, but it seems that this is probably how it would be. Nobody wants to work so why would they want to do anything else that requires effort, such as learning to play an instrument or go to a performance for that matter?

A lovely piece of work overall, I cannot say more than that. :)

I'm not a musician in any sense of the word. For me, all music falls into only two categories: I like the way it sounds or I don't. Nevertheless, I still found this to be a very moving story. Ustvestia's reflections on the decline brought about by Mother Brain could stir just about anyone thanks to the feeling you've put into it. I've read plenty about how the Palmans living on Motavia became lazy and disinterested in things, but this is probably the first time the words had any real weight to them beyond simple facts.

[Reveal] Spoiler:
I'm particularly fond of the ending, and how Rolf and his group were able to restore hope to this one life. Helping out in the little ways, perhaps without even knowing it, is one of the hallmarks of a great heroic character. My only disappointment in this story is that it leaves me wondering if Ustvestia will be successful in bringing music back to the world. ;)
