The obvious advantage with leaving a story on the shelf for a little time is that you'll get ideas to refine your initial train of thoughts.
The dubious advantage with leaving a story on the shelf for a very long time is that you'll let that train of thought crash into the barrier of forgetfulness and allow you to make a new, potentially better one.
That's my uselessly metaphoric way of saying: I have no idea where this story was originally going but no matter, I got nice new ideas now.
Now my goal is to avoid my usual trap: illusions of grandeur. I tend to stretch and stretch and when the document is 30, 40, even 50 pages long, I lose focus.
