Remains of some giant turtles were recently found on an island by archeologists. They were part of a family of massive creatures dating back to the dinosaurs, believed to have died off 50,000 years ago. The recent discovery proves they survived to as recent as 3,000 years ago, meaning they lived alongside humans.

This family of turtles features horned heads, armored clubs, for tails, and range from 5 to 7 feet wide and 5 to 11 feet long. Combined with the size and look, some people are calling it a real-life version of Bowser. Here's an article about the discovery, with a picture of one of the turtles.

But, there's no word as to whether evidence of a time traveling plumber or walking mushroom could be found on the island, which is disappointing. ;)

Some of those turtles at would be even taller, or longer, than me! Ahhh!!!!!!!!

Terrific that they named one of them after the TMNT!

They should do the same for Bowser, etc.
