Games radar: 5 things modern RPGs can learn from EarthBound

I totally agree with all of these. Especially the battle sprites and the automatic win after you hit a certain level. This game is almost 20 years old and yet still developers haven't consistently incorporated some relatively simple things that make this game so good. Plus the sense of humor...even EarthBound's detractors admit the sense of humor and writing are amazing.

I might have to go play it now...haven't played anything in a while...

WB : Very interesting article ! I've never played Eartbound (but I've just tested it some years ago !) but maybe I'll try to do it ! Those features seems to be very interesting, even if random battles (like in the recent Bravely Default ! ;) ) were never a problem to me !
But we can continue to discuss it later :)

You should do it. It's now on the WiiU virtual console and if nothing else, a ROM and SNES emulator are easy enough to find (do not go for a cartridge unless you have the money to spend on it - they're expensive!) While there's nothing really WRONG with random battles, having the sprites visible is far more interesting because it adds a strategy element that makes just wandering around a lot more fun.

I have the romand a SNES emulator on my Pandora so no problem ! The only thing that I lack is time but I'll try to play it soon. I know that many games are expensive ! And especially this one I think :)
And agree about the fact that visible foes make it really more strategic ! But if there is random battles, no problem about it for me :)
