Phantasy Star IV introduced many features not used by many other RPGs at the time it was released. Many of those features have become standard fare that gamers expect in nearly every video game released today. One such feature is a visual identification of a person speaking, allowing players to follow conversations without reading each character's name like a movie script. Small portraits like the one shown here are used for all the major, and many minor, characters in the game. Even the cutscenes included these portraits.
