Phantasy Star: Fringes of Algo

During his quest to put an end to Lune's attacks on Landen, Nial encountered a mysterious man named Ryan. The scarred man is the leader of a rebellion that seeks to oust Lune from power. On meeting Nial, Ryan immediately accuses the young prince of being a spy in Lune's service. He quickly changes his mind when Lune suddenly appears in the rebel camp to demand everyone's surrender. The rest of Ryan's story - such as why he chose to rebel against the leader of his own Layan people or where he originally came from - is never revealed.

Following in the footsteps pioneered by Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom gave each playable character an individual head shot portrait to make them more recognizable to players. This was especially vital for this game, which tended to use the same set of graphics for several characters with slight color changes. Unlike the similar pictures of Nei and friends, however, these portraits were used for speech in important story scenes and the standard character menu. The previous game restricted the portrait availability to Rolf's house, but this one allowed the players to see the characters at any time they were available for play.

The best adjective to be tied to Ryan is eaxctly the one used just before : mysterious !!! And with those so black sunglasses...it's even more mysterious ! And as Ryan's history isn't very developped in the game...
