Phantasy Star III: Maia

Postby Thoul » Sat Dec 5, '09, 12:01 am

All the drama of Phantasy Star III begins with this young woman, the mysterious Maia. She was found washed ashore on a beach by Rhys some time before the game starts. Now with no memory of her past, she finds love and a future with her hero. Unfortunately, a dragon interrupts their wedding day and spirits the girl off to destinations unknown. We do not see her again until Rhys as travelled all the way from his home to her own and defeated her father in combat. With her true identity and past revealed, Rhys must decide between abandoning all he knows for this woman or rejecting the purpose of his quest for another.

Following in the footsteps pioneered by Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom gave each playable character an individual head shot portrait to make them more recognizable to players. This was especially vital for this game, which tended to use the same set of graphics for several characters with slight color changes. Unlike the similar pictures of Nei and friends, however, these portraits were used for speech in important story scenes and the standard character menu. The previous game restricted the portrait availability to Rolf's house, but this one allowed the players to see the characters at any time they were available for play.

Rhys: Err, isn't it bad luck to see the bride before the wedding, Maia?
Maia: Oh, dearest Rhys, you worry too much! You speak as though the Layans would abduct me as we said our sacred vows!
Lyle: (hiding behind column) [Persuade/Lie] No we won't!
Maia: [Success] Well, if that mysterious voice says I'm fine, then there's nothing to worry about.
Rhys: [Failure] Lyle, I'm gonna stab you.

To bad Maia was never made playable. I'd prefer to have her in the first generation instead of Lena personally.

It would have been nice if Maia was playable at some point (I really expected it, the first time I played), but I don't think she would have had a role to fill in the party. Since she's a princess in a dress, she probably would have fallen into the magic-user role, similar to Thea. Lyle filled that role pretty well for the first generation.
