Phantasy Star II Text Adventures: Yousis's Introduction

Postby Thoul » Thu Jun 23, '11, 12:00 am

This is the first screen of the Phantasy Star II Text Adventures featuring Rolf, as seen in the original modem version. At the upper left, we can see the in-game logo window. The game title is displayed there for most of the adventure, occasionally being replaced with scenes of opponents Rolf encounters during his travels. Rolf's Japanese name is romanized as "Yousis" here, which contradicts the title screen from this version of the game. On the title screen, his name is given as "Yushis." It should be little surprise that the game was edited to use "Eusis" in both places for the later Game no Kanzume release.

Seems like they cleaned up these text adventures a bit for their Kanzume release, huh? That makes good sense to me!

So... let's see if I understood it correctly:

Yushis - Original modem version (title-screen) & PlayStation2 (title-screen)
Yousis - Original modem version (in-game) & PlayStation2 (in-game)
Eusis - Game no Kanzume (Mega CD)

Since they changed so much, they could at least have removed the last "s" ('s). I wonder why the 2008 PS2 collection didn't had a port of the Mega CD version.

No. That would not be standard English grammar. Proper names that end in "s" get an s after the apostrophe in their possessive form, except in the cases of important historical and legendary figures like Moses.

Reference:

1. Form the possesive singular of nouns by adding 's.
Follow this rule whatever the final consonant. Thus write,
Charles's friend
Burns's poems
the witch's malice
Exceptions are the possessives of ancient proper names ending in -es and -is, the possessive Jesus', and such forms as for conscience' sake, for righteousness' sake. But such forms as Moses' Laws, Isis' Temple are commonly replaced by
the laws of Moses
the temple of Isis

Yes, you have it correct. :)

My best guess would be that whoever was responsible for putting the PS2 collection together didn't know the games were edited later. Or perhaps a copy of the edited versions wasn't available. Whatever the case, it's a sad oversight considering they went to the trouble of including even the English translations of the main four titles. :(
