CVG reports that the ESRB has rated Phantasy Star II for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. This indicates that it will be offered for download over the consoles' respective network systems in the future, like it is available on Wii's Virtual Console.

It seems rather odd to release the game like this in light of the upcoming Genesis collection on those consoles. I wonder how much PSII by itself will cost.

That's interesting to know....it does seem strange why they'd release it when it will be available for disc. I wonder if they will be any differences between the two other than the achievements...

Maybe some people would just prefer this game rather then a whole bunch of games (I dunno why...lol I'd rather the lot but and anyways). Its kind of a good thing to because the classic series is starting to be introduced to a larger audience again so more people can have the chance to play such a legendary game.

Just Phantasy Star II? What about the others?

Yeah, Just PSII. The others haven't been rated for these consoles yet. I haven't heard any more news on when or if PSII will actually be released by itself either.

A minor update on this: the rating for the PlayStation 3 release has been removed from the ESRB site. I haven't read anything about why. The Xbox 360 rating is still present.

On Monday, Sega put out a press release about several new games coming to Xbox Live. They're collectively calling it "SEGA Vintage Collection 2" and it includes Phantasy Star II. So it's finally confirmed by Sega, but there's still no release date.

Does anybody know if the game will be released in Japan, or also in the U.S.?

This is for the US and Europe. The press release came from Sega Europe. Sega of America announced it via their blog and has some press screenshots out. The ESRB only rates games for North American release as well, which is further confirmation of a US release.

There's been no announcement about this for Japan, to the best of my knowledge.
