One of the most famous family of foes from the original Phantasy Star are the Zombie, Ghoul, and Batalion. These shambling undead monsters attacked by opening their mouths to inhuman, gaping pits, from which ghastly secretions of saliva would pour. Bloody wounds and red lesions added to their frightful appearance. In Phantasy Star - Deluxe Edition, these creatures have a new design that has much in common with the original. Like all enemies, they are no longer animated, so the shambling and drooling attack are gone. The wounds and decayed state of the reanimated corpses are clear to see, however.

I always thought it was interesting and a good thing to see Zombies in fantasy (or sci-fi) themed RPGs. Now days they seem to only be in bloody and gory beat 'em ups, and first person shooter games.

Zombies have certainly taken the horror scene by storm in shooters, that's for sure. Most RPGs seem content to have skeletons or vampires for their undead quota these days. There's nothing quite like those old PSI zombies!

Bumping up this former Image Of The Day!

A zombie from Phantasy Star: Deluxe Edition. Sure looks a lot different than the zombies in Plants & Zombies, one of my other favorite games.
