When video games were localized for release in North America during the 16-bit console years, they were not simply translated. The localization teams would occasionally rewrite sections of a script so their audience could better relate to the game. At times, this included change the names of items. Once such case occurred with a footwear item called Shoes in the North American release of Phantasy Star II. The original item, pictured here, was much more like a boot. Out of the eight footwear items in the game, six are named as boots in the North American version. The reasons for naming this particular item as Shoes instead of just another type of boot is unclear.

At least this change was in the footwear. The problem is when they mess with key points of the story without realizing its importance for other game references.

Bumping up this former Image Of The Day!

They look like boots to me! Of course, boots are just a type of shoe, aren't they?
