Shields are a fairly well known concept needing little introduction to any video gamer these days. In Phantasy Star III, they are the handheld protective equipment used by male characters. Coming in six varieties, there is a shield matching each of the emels available for women in both material and protection provided. The prices are very different however; shields always cost half the price or less than their emel counterpart, with the exception of the slightly over half priced laconian variant.

I wonder what the artist had in mind when drawing this shield? It's certainly not made of metal. It looks more like it's made from animal hide.

Sems to be a sort of tribal shield. In fact, all the Laconia-made material has always been the most valuables to obtain in all the Phantasy Stars. And indeed the most expensive !

This shield might be made of very polished wood or maybe some type of leather. All of the protective gear pieces from the manual look very unimpressive in terms of stopping power, so I'm thinking the artist was just told to draw weak, first level equipment.

It's a possibility I didn't take into account. But a weak shield is better than none :)

It does look sort of like wood, but it's hard to say. That's a great picture no matter what though...great close up detail.
