Phantasy Star Collection (Saturn): Rika's Squirrel

Postby Thoul » Fri Feb 27, '09, 4:37 am

Here we are reminded of Rika's bright spirit and naivety. She was raised in a cold, sterile environment. It was not until meeting Chaz and his friends that she left that place and began to truly experience life and the world around her.

This piece is one of five, each featuring two Phantasy Star IV characters. They were created for the cover of SPEC #9, the final issue of the Japan only SEGA fan club newsletter. SPEC #9 was never published, though. As such, these pieces were "lost" until being published in the Phantasy Star: Official Production Compendium.

My first thought every time I see this image is 'wow, that's a really small squirrel.' Then again, they grow 'em big up around here. But I love this image. It's just cute and innocent.

Yeah, the proportions are a little off I think. Every squirrel I've ever seen with a body that size had a longer tail than what we see here. I guess it could be some breed native to Japan (or Motavia, if you like) that isn't well known elsewhere.

This scene reminds me of an episode from Saber Marionette J (1996) where Lime wants to adopt a squirrel.

This image shows that the green parts with trees on the Mota's map intend to represent dense/real forest and not just a few trees with little grass (the few places that reminds Palma).

Nice pic. Rika sure looks suprised. Probably due to the fact she is now seeing in real life all the things that SEED taught her whilst locked away from civilisation.

That animal's ears are very similar to hers = "big" and with that black ending. Maybe she's telling that to Chaz.

Which reminds me of a "PSII fan manga" (maybe he took the idea from that picture... don't know)

The squirell are in many "approchive" moods in these two fantastic drawings ! :) Alas, it's not the same in true life ! ;)
The colored image is great : nature at its best, and so are aour two beloved characters from PS IV !
