In the
Phantasy Star II game manual, each of the playable adventurers is introduced with a brief summary, a picture of their in-game portrait, and an upper body illustration that provides a glimpse of their personality and inner character. These illustrations would later be reused in almost every artwork collection and book that included
Phantasy Star II material, but rarely with the quality offered in this example.
This is the illustration used for Rolf, the swordsman and main character. Unlike all the other party members (except Nei), Rolf has no official last name. This may be from growing up in an orphanage or from a desire to prevent the player from realizing his connection to Alis, heroine of
Phantasy Star too early in the game.
In the original
Phantasy Star II manual, Rolf's illustration was partially obscured. The manual was hole punched for insertion into a binder. The holes happen to go right through Rolf's chest and shoulder.
