Phantasy Star: Fringes of Algo

This is part of a series of five drawings by Toyo Ozaki in this super deformed style. There is one for each of the first generation party members in Phantasy Star III. In this installment, we have a young Rhys, Prince of Landen. His scowl presents his anger at the kidnapping of Maia, providing an excellent representation of his mind at the start of his adventure. The Japanese text would appear to be the character's name.

The text reads Ke-I-N. "Kein".

I thought it would be something like that. I ran the text on this and the others in the series through Google's translator. It gave me close, but not quite right, versions of the names fan translators have said were in the Japanese game. On this one, it returned "In Ke." The translator still needs work, clearly.

I have most of these scanned pics on my computer as they were very popular on PS sites over the years. I should check a few of them, see what I can read, as I can read Hiragana (that alphabet) quite easily.

I think the ke up by Rhys's head is katakana instead of hiragana, which is kinda weird from what I remember of college Japanese. (Maybe he's mad his name is mistyped. =p)

I was able to figure many of them out using a Japanese OCR utility, then plugging the result of that into Google. It's not perfect by any means, but usually serviceable. One of the few exceptions is the Townspeople drawing. The OCR couldn't read the stylized text from that one very well.
