Even the 1992 Tokyo Toy Show prototype version of Phantasy Star IV started with sketches of the characters. This sketch, which was used in finalized form alongside similar sketches of Chaz, Rika, and Wren, shows a very dynamic Rune. I like to imagine that he has just cast a spell or struck a foe with his staff. We also get an interesting peek into the design process from this image. You can clearly see the outline of Rune's upper arm and back under the cape, indicating that his full form was drawn first and the cape was "draped" over him later.

Looks pretty good! It seems as though Rune's design didn't change all that much from the prototype.

Yeah, it seems like the main four characters were pretty stable by this point. When we get to some of the Rune specific images in this set, we'll get to see how he developed over time, though.

And poor Raja and Kyra still hadn't been invented at the time of this prototype.

Dang, he didn't really change that much from his final form. It looks like he's preparing a spell for whoopin' someone's butt!
