Hidden items in Phantasy Star

Postby Wing Eye » Tue Sep 20, '11, 9:45 pm

So the other day I was playing around with Phantasy Star on the Meka emulator with its memory editor and stumbled upon something really interesting, some hidden items that, as far as I know, are not found in the game!
The two hidden items were "M SYSTEM" and "ZILLION"
Both items cannot be used (it says there is no need to use that item) nor sold at the shops.
If anyone wants to see this it can easily be done with the Meka emulator, just open up the memory editor and scroll down to line C4C0 (these are your items, to use the new items you have to replace existing items, so buy a couple colas) and replace two of the item's code (cola shows as 24) with 3D(M SYSTEM) and 3F(ZILLION)

This sort of stuff is common in old games where items, NPCs and entire area are defined in memory but never used.

It's fun to look for them and theorize on what might have been!

well... if I remember reading somewhere before, Zillion is an old Master System game, and I assume M SYSTEM is a Master System, so, if you were to put them both together, I'd say Alice has a hobby! =P

Zillion is a Master System game (one of my favorites, actually) made by the same team as Phantasy Star. It makes me wonder if there is a Phantasy Star reference in Zillion...

I want to thank you for pointing this out, Wing Eye. When I was working on the PS Deluxe translation, there was one item name I could never figure out. It translated to some nonsense like "killer of the gun." The M System was there, so that's last item must have been Zillion.

Hmm I never knew Zillion was made by the same team as PS. I loved Zillion. Played it a lot and felt really proud once I finished it the first time, hehe. My brother drew a map of the whole dungeon base while I was playing, just like we did PS.
"Rolf, there's no hope for me. If Neifirst is dead, I must die, too."
And in so saying, Nei silently closed her eyes.

I wasn't a big fan of Zillion 2 to be honest, too much arcade like in my eyes.

Right. It was one of the best arcade type game on SMS. Difficulty was ideally balanced too.

Zillion was (is?) a good game ! But right, difficulty was well balanced, and at this time it wasn't always the case !!:)
Drawing maps ? Maybe the creators of the two franchises were a fan of map drawing ? ;)
