I was afraid that the dwarves would fall victim to overload like that. Thirteen dwarves is just too much for a two hour-ish film. Heck, I thought it was too much in the book and had a hard time keeping them straight there. I can only imagine how badly some of them must fall into the background in this film.

Gimli was great because he was part of an ensemble cast where each member he interacted with was different. His scenes with Aragorn and Legolas were some of the most fun in the trilogy because of that. Those films were also able to make the racial differences clear, because he was always around someone taller with less armor or hair. He stood out from the crowd. This time everyone in the crowd is a dwarf, so the new film is trying to use those facial features to make them memorable. I haven't seen the film, but I saw pictures of some of the dwarves... I was not impressed at their level of distinctness.

I hope the wizards do better, both in this film and the coming pair.

I'd say don't hold your breath. As I said, Saruman was the epitome of blarg.

And Radagast... well, let's just say he takes comic relief to a whole new level.
