I hope MGM can pull through this. They've been a part of the movie business for so long that it's hard to imagine what it would be liked without them. I also hope this doesn't have a negative impact on The Hobbit movies. If MGM can't supply their portion of the budget, we may only get one of the two movies.

Ouch, that might push the movies back a bit. It sounds like he's recovering well, so maybe the impact will not be very big.

Actor Orlando Bloom will return as Legolas in the new "Hobbit" movies:

I'm all for greater connection between the Hobbit films and the LOTR films, but I'm curious to see how this will work. Legolas was not in the book, as best I can recall. Maybe they're planning to replace one of the book characters with him.

I recall something about Legolas getting one of the other elves drunk at some point allowing...some sort of escape? BlackWaltz0 was telling me about it the other day, but he's not mentioned by name in the book, only as a prince or something.

Yeah, Legolas was definitely not named at the time of The Hobbit, but by his backstory as Thranduil's son it seems pretty likely he was there during the events in Thranduil's kingdom. So I have no issue with his being in the movie, and I think Bloom made a very good Legolas, but I hope they don't have him chew up too much of the screen time like in LotR. As long as he's not crashing into Smaug on a flying shield or something I'll be happy!

I vaguely remember the dwarves needing to escape from the elves in Mirkwood, Legolas' home, now that you mention it. All details are fuzzy for me, so now I'm wanting to read the book again to refresh my memory on that. If they're planning to use Legolas as one of the unnamed characters in that part, I would like that.

I always thought it would have been a nice touch for the LOTR books or movies to acknowledge that part of Bilbo's journey by having him meet Legolas in some way. This isn't quite the same thing, but I'm happy with the concept. It's a good way to provide movie connections without any major alterations to the story.

Yeah, that's definitely what I've been hearing. It's only conjecture at this point, but it makes sense, especially since Tolkien had to revise a lot of stuff in The Hobbit anyway once he started working on Lord of the Rings. Aragorn and Saruman are also apparently having expanded roles, since they're getting into the business of the White Council and I think even tracking down Gollum, since they're tackling a bit of the stuff that went on between the books, from what I've read.

That stuff could actually be pretty cool in its own right, actually. I always liked the appendices in the books, and wanted to see more.
