Party Members in RPGs

Some RPGs allow you to recruit just enough characters to fill out your lines in battle - often three, four, or five people and no more than that. Other games let you recruit many people, anywhere from six to 100 or more, and choose a a handful to be used in the combat. Which of these approaches do you prefer and why?

I like having just enough. I don't want 100 characters when I can only use five. Instead of getting a ton of poorly developed characters, I'll take the five that have a lot of personality and exploration of their lives.

I like to have a small group of reserves. Say, a three or four person party and maybe around 10 people to choose from. Kind of like what Phantasy Star IV did. That gives enough story to everyone and lets each player have the kind of party they like.
