The irony of this sale, which was discussed at length in a collecting group I'm heavily involved in, is that this is one of the most useless prototypes out there and yet managed to sell for a bonkers amount of money that shocked everyone in the collecting group, literally exceeded our highest guessed at sale price by twelve times (12x). Yes, we theorized it would sell for no more than $30,000, and only conceived that amount based on the Apple-like cult-ish fandom that Nintendo has gained in this century.
But then we go back not even six year ago and both of the truely rare, truely viable, and totally functional, prototype Sega Neptune's, for which only the two were ever made, sold at public auction for right around $20,000 each.
