Post subject: New Atari Game Console ?
PostPosted: Mon Jun 19, '17, 6:18 pm
I love my old Atari game consoles. We still have the 2600, although haven't played it in a very long time. So, it is great news to read that Atari may be working on a new game console. I only hope it will be affordable and have some great games.

Would you buy a new Atari game system?

I can't see it directly competing with the PS4/Xbox One/Switch, so I doubt it will be a "modern" console in that sense. Their Atari Flashback systems already cover NES Classic territory. Something like the NVIDIA Shield TV or a Steam Machine seems more likely to me. Even so, it's surreal to hear that Atari's back in the hardware business. I can't wait to hear more about this!

I thought this thing was vaporware by this point, but the Atari VCS will be released this holiday season for $400, along with a cheaper $250 model sometime after launch:

For those specs, $400 seems questionable (even the base model is pushing it a bit, at least to me). At that price range, a console or cheap laptop/HTPC plus the Atari Classics Collections (or Atari Vault on PC) would be a better investment. I just can't see the VCS being able to compete when there are cheaper options that can do the same thing and then some. Also consider that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will likely be available by the time the Atari is released. It's dead on arrival if you ask me.

Wow, that price is very high!! I was sort of looking forward to the new Atari but I don't know about paying that much for it. Although other game systems have run around $400.00 in the past, that is still a lot of money, especially in today's economy, etc. Think I will wait awhile and see if perhaps the price drops later on or something.
