Best Retro Horror Game?

Postby Thoul » Sat Oct 31, '09, 5:03 pm

Since it's Halloween, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors just recently came out on Virtual Console, this makes a good time to look back at games that featured horror themes. Games from the NES era tended to use a lighthearted approach to horror, since at that time most games truly were aimed at children. What are some of your favorite classic horror games?

More recently, Survival horror became very popular early in this decade, with series like Resident Evil or Silent Hill making a big splash. Sega even has one in House of the Dead. Do you play these kinds of games and if so, which is your favorite?

Probably the Ghouls ‘N Ghosts series by Capcom would be my favourite retro horror game series. Although it’s not exactly scary but it has lots of demons and stuff in it.

I'm meh on horror games. NO horror game can ever hope to match the horror that is Giygas at the end of Earthbound. But I don't think Earthbound qualifies as a horror game...which makes Giygas all the better as you don't really expect the last boss to be what it is. :D

So I guess if I have to name ONE...well, I always found the Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall to have KIND of a medievalish horror theme about it. Maybe it's the moaning voice of a dead guy screaming 'VENGEAAAAANCE!' in the city of Daggerfall constantly during the night...and the many other ghouls, ghosts, vampires, wraiths, skeletons, werewolves (win!) and other horror monstrosities running around the world.

Without giving up too much of the plotline of Daggerfall, that voice is King Lysandus of Daggerfall. He's crying out for vengeance because he was murdered. That's the main reason your character shows up in Daggerfall...but back to the topic on hand :

I think the earlier Resident Evil games and Silent Hill were by far the most frightening. The intro to Silent Hill alone is disturbing enough to cause mental terror's. The first 3 Resident Evil games at least were trying to scare you, these last few have been ho-hum at best IMO.

Thanks Darkil. Couldn't remember the name of the guy or why he was screaming vengeance. Haven't played that game in a good number of years.

Never really got into horror games, but the Silent Hill series always looked...interesting to me.

Now, it seems that Silent Hill 1 is available for purchase on the PSN network. I might look into that...
