Misfit moments in games

I think, really, the entire ending of Earthbound is a misfit moment. Because right up until that point, with a couple of exceptions, the game had been pretty silly and not serious (there's an entire town of little potato-people with big noses and bows on a single strand of hair, m'kay?)

Then all of the sudden, you're being transferred into a robot body to go travel through time to go fight your next-door neighbor. And oh yeah, that shapeless but always-shifting psychotic red thing that wants to destroy the universe that likes to babble nonsense and your name a lot and the only way you can beat it is praying. Suddenly it just stops being, you know, silly, and just turns downright horrifying.
