Microsoft Will Unveil Windows 9 Next Month

Microsoft is set to unveil Windows 9 at a Press Event on September 30th, 2014. Sooner than expected, but that's fine with me.

Unless it comes out with something that will make me happy, I'll just stick with Windows7. I'm pretty happy with it. Heck, I might just keep Windows 7 until it's no longer supported.

I'm never in a hurry to upgrade my operating systems either, but I like to know what's out there and available to me. I'm still running 64 Bit Vista on my desktop PC. I have a copy of Windows 7, but I want to wait to activate it when I build my next PC, which I'm thinking about doing pretty soon. My current PC is about 3 years old now.

I'm still running Win7-64 on the Core2Duo I bought early 2009. It's still adequate but slowly but surely, it's starting to feel sluggish. If I'm going to upgrade, it won't be on that joke that is Windows 8. That said, I can't wait to see if Windows 9 will enchant or disappoint.

Considering Microsoft usually keeps support on the last three versions of Windows, Windows 8 isn't going to go away any time soon.

To be fair, the one teaser screen I've seen (with a Windows 7-style Start Menu alongside Windows 8 Start Tiles) does look intriguing.

Fortunately, according to Wikipedia, support for Windows 8 will officially cease on January 12, 2016 (at which point you must upgrade to Windows 8.1 to receive support that will cease to be on January 10, 2023.*)

Unfortunately for most of us, Windows 7 mainstream support ends this January, but Microsoft will happily still provide some support until January 14, 2020. So I guess this means Windows has a longer support period than most gaming consoles**.

*Dates subject to change at Microsoft's whims, anyway.
**This doesn't count the Famicom, which came out in Japan in 1985 and Nintendo officially dropped support for it in 2008, and obly because they finally ran out of spare parts.

Windows 9 has been formally announced!

...and it is called Windows 10.

Start Menu's coming back (and will also have the Win8 live tiles on the side for the four people on Earth who still want them), and Cortana will be a part of it, so you get your own sexy computer woman to be your guide.

Just wondering if anyone here has upgraded to Windows 10, and if so, what do you think of it?

The time for the free upload of Windows 10 is fast approaching (end of June, I think). Is it worth having, free or not?
