Interesting tidbit in the news related to Kinect and possible shopping carts of the future:

I have to agree with one of the posters in the comments section in that I personally cannot see how stores will think of spending money to put this on shopping carts as one can only imagine how many shopping carts some stores must have (probably hundreds, etc.), but I guess we'll see how the idea takes shape.

Back when supermarkets tried putting simple calculators on shopping carts in my area, that was a colossal failure because the calculators disappeared. A $100-$150 US piece of gaming tech presents a much more tempting target for thieves. If some aren't stolen within the first two weeks, I'll be shocked.

The automatic checkout idea is a nice concept, but I don't like the idea of a cart that follows the shopper paired with that. What happens when someone drops an expensive item into another person's cart? The shopper isn't going to notice, because the cart is behind them. The returns counter will get a lot more busy, I bet.

Interesting ! Not a big fan of Kinect and all the lot but it's a good experience.

If the idea ever gets off the ground, it may work well in some bigger cities, etc., but I don't think smaller towns will go for it very well. Jmho.
