A 1937 first edition of JRR Tolkien's book, "The Hobbit", sold for a whopping sum, along with various other Tolkien items:

Wow, and I thought my copy was old, (sometime in the 70's).

It'd be great to be able to say you own something like that, especially if you're a big fan of Tolkien, (who isn't?!) but I can think of a great many things I'd more readily drop a spare £60,000 on than a book I'd never dare to open for fear of it falling apart!

1937? Wow, I didn't realize it was that old. I thought he published his books much later than that. I think my copy is also from the 70's, but I thought he first published sometime in the 50's.

I guess this would be the ultimate collection piece for a big Tolkien fan. I do like the man's work, but like Reno said, there are other things I'd rather spend that amount of money on.
