'Wizard Of Oz' prequel

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Thu Jan 20, '11, 7:05 pm

Anyone here a fan of the classic movie "The Wizard Of Oz" starring Judy Garland as 'Dorothy', along with her pet dog "Toto" and other characters of 'Scarecrow', 'Tin Man', and 'The Cowardly Lion' and also 'Glenda, The Good Witch', 'The Wicked Witch Of The West', and the great 'Oz'? The movie was based on a book.

This movie has been redone various ways, etc., and now there is a movie being done which takes place before the events in "The Wizard Of Oz", and the new movie is to be called, "Oz, The Great And Powerful".

Actor Robert Downey, Jr., ("Ironman"), was to be in the new "Oz" movie but now he has dropped out and they are hoping Johnny Depp may take the role. Sam Rami, who has directed "Spiderman" movies will be directing this new "Oz" movie.

So, who do you think would be the better character of "Oz"..Downey, jr. or Depp ?

Actually, I think they could both be terrific in this role and can't wait to see what they do with this prequel movie.

Comments or Opinions?

I don't recall too much about the Oz character himself. From what I do remember, there was a gentlemanly quality about him, which might fit Downey more. But there was also a bit of a humor to it, with him being the strange old man behind the curtain. That sounds more like a Depp role.

Either actor could do the role justice, if you ask me. It should be an entertaining performance, regardless.

Can't remember if this prequel ever happened, or not.

However, today. Friday. November 03 is the anniversary of when the movie was first shown on TV in 1956:

Love the movie! The Sequel (Return to Oz) was also fun. I did see parts of "Oz the great and Powerful" which was also a bit of fun (not sure if it was based on any of the books). I also remember a TV mini series called "The Dreamer of Oz" which was about the creation of the Oz stories themselves. It featured John Ritter as L. Fran Baum. There are so many books to this series, I am actually surprised they have never been adapted in TV or Movie form.
All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.
