By far Phantasy Star II. The dungeons are insane, you lose too much time on them and you may get your party killed easily in the last Dezoris dungeons if you don't find the right path fast. Besides that, the game is too long because of the huge mazes. Not to count that, without the Visiphone trick, you just can't save outside towns.
Phantasy Star I has more or less the same problems with fewer mazes, particularly Baya Malay, Medusa Tower and the mazes where you find the Laconia Sword and Shield. Some random encounters with Marauders and Magicians spoil the attempts to reach the objectives in these mazes because of the Thunder magic.
Phantasy Star III is a lot easier than the others. The beginning is a bit hard, but once you pick up, you don't have further problems.
Phantasy Star IV is just navigate and press buttons to read the history. This is good for people who got hooked on the history, but took the challenge aspect of the game. The game could have made the combination attacks and skills a lot more interesting if it was harder, but you can usually beat it with your characters without knowing any combination attack, not using most of the skills and never needing to level up.
A person only sees and hears what he wants to see and hear and disregards the rest.
