Bird Drawing - Ivory Billed Woodpecker

Mmm...yeah. I'm happy with how this turned out, for the most part. First time I tried doing a background, so resemble a woody, misty swamp. That part didn't turn out as I hoped it would, but it still looks pretty good.

As for the bird itself, yeah...I'm REALLY happy with that.

Absolutely beautiful bird!!! The red crest is so striking against the black. Magnificent detail overall but especially on the wing there.

Backgrounds are like every other aspect of drawing, they take a lot of practice to master. I'm confident that if you keep at it, you'll be putting together backdrop scenery that is as impressive as your birds have become.

Even though the background may not be all you were hoping for, it serves to bring out the colors of the bird itself vibrantly. I'm trying to imagine this drawing without the background... while the bird is still excellent in form and color, I think the backing makes it pop out even more.

When I finished this one, that's exactly what I thought - the background didn't come out quite how I hoped, but it gave the colors some contrast so the bird popped out more. And I do think that's a good thing! That said, once I get back into drawing (PS3 taking up most of my spare time between work and class) I'll continue to work on backgrounds.
