'Dark Shadows' Frid dies

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Fri Apr 20, '12, 4:44 am

Actor Jonathan Frid who played the role of Barnabus Collins in the original TV and original Movie versions of "Dark Shadows" has died at the age of 87. He also has a small role in the new "Dark Shadows" movie soon to be released starring actor Johnny Depp in the role of Barnabus.

Sad news. My heart is broken!! Barnabas was my favorite! :(

Jonathan Frid was a wonderful actor and he played Barnabus so well. The character was only supposed to be short term in the daytime soap opera drama, but Frid did it so well that he became THE heart and soul of "Dark Shadows".

Condolences to his family and friends. :rose: :tombstone:

The original run of the show was before my time, but I saw some of it when Sci-Fi Channel (back before it became Syfy) was running it in the mornings a few years ago. The show didn't have the same scary edge that I've heard it originally packed. Modern horror had desensitized me to it, I suppose. Even so, I could see how it would have been ground breaking back when it originally aired. Frid was really good, given the material. I've heard he continued to do convention appearances for many years and embraced the fandom a great deal. Not many actors who were in a popular show will continue to do that.

I remember when "Dark Shadows" was shown on the Sci-Fi channel. I think I have some old VHS tapes of some of those shows around here somewhere. Sure wish I could find them now as I'd love to watch the show again. It can probably be found somewhere online to watch. I'll have to try and find it somewhere.

Oh, that reminds me that awhile back I was looking up some other DVD's and happened to find where you can purchase the whole "Dark Shadows" collection, I believe it is. See here for more on that:

Sounds awesome!!!!! Love that packaging too.

And, I also found out that Jonathan Frid had his own website..wish I had known about this earlier while he was still alive, but check this out:

Bumping this up to post that another "Dark Shadows" actor has passed away. Humbert Allen Astredo played the role of warlock Nicholas Blair on "Dark Shadows". He was a scary dude on there and played his role perfectly. He was also on many other tv programs, etc. He was 86.
