Bees

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Wed Mar 31, '10, 5:36 pm

Well, first it was the butterfly population decreasing, and now it seems the bee population is decreasing also:

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id ... _article=1

What's going on here with all these decreases in population?

Is it another reaction of global warming?

Or is it a reaction or cause of something else???

Comments or Opinions?

It would have to be something to with their habitat definitely. Maybe it’s getting to hot for them or people are just pushing into their territory and they're leaving and dying off because they can’t adapt anywhere else. Kinda sad because I like honey  but I don’t like the stings they give you. :blank:

I think this has mostly be observed in artificial habitats of some kind, where the bees are kept and monitored by people. Probably for getting the honey. Anyway, I think it might be something about the artificial habitat. Maybe it's too hot or there's something that's damaging to them. The article said something about winter, so maybe it's because the winters have been colder the last couple of years.

I heard about that. I heard that bees disappearing could actually be really detrimental to plants and our environment in general (pollination issues). Plus, I would miss them. They're so cute.

Well, this doesn't really have much to do with the above story, but since it is about Bees, I thought it would go well in this topic thread.

Seems there was a wreck in Minnesota where a truck crashed and the truck was carrying 17 Million Bees! :yikes:

There's nothing worse than an angry bee. :lookaround:

Except 17 million of them...
I remember when my dad used to keep bees, he had to go remove a swarm from a nearby farm. When we were taking them home he simply put them in a box with a net taped over the top and had it sitting on his lap. :o
Though I remember the time when he had his queen delivered, it was just in a little wooden box in a packet being delivered by hand. I know the postman was spooked anyway.

Anyhoo! Another thing to consider is the parasite problem. I can't remember what it is but it's a nightmare for anyone who keeps bees because it's so darned hard to completely remove, which you have to do otherwise it starts up again. :/ There's also the problem of wild bees migrating into other countries too.

I would agree that 17 million angry bees is quite a few degrees worse. ;) Man, I'm glad I wasn't anywhere near that place. That's a disaster movie of the week plot in the making right there.

Throw in a part about the truck crashing into a nuclear waste dump and you have a blockbuster. Giant killer bees. :D At least you would hear them coming.

Though I think I'm really more afraid of the midges. In my neck of the woods it isn't so bad but the species that live in the highlands are a nasty lot. They will swarm you and cover you from head to toe if you don't cover up. Plus you can feel them biting you and they leave nice red spots behind too. Nasty buggers, the only good thing is that they come out in the summer months. :ill:
