Finding the oldies

Remembering the games of yesteryear.

Finding the oldies

Do you still buy older games today? If so, where do you find them for sale? You can't get most of them in a major name store unless it's in a remake or collection, so what is your source for retro purchases?

During the warmer parts of the year, I sometimes go to flea markets and find some good deals there. There are people that set up there week after week selling, like a business. Most of their stuff is overpriced, but sometimes they have a good gem that is worth getting.

Flea markets, private game stores, or chains that specialize in buying/selling old stuff is where I buy any old games I want. I found Earthbound with the player's guide at a private game store. Wasn't cheap, but worth every last penny.

Yard and garage sales are the best, though incredibly unreliable, sources. Also thrift stores, privately owned resale shops, and online auction sites.

Never know what you'll find at thrift stores. A couple weeks ago I was in one and they had a good number of Dreamcast games and some REALLY old computer (like DOS!) games.

I go to a lot of yard sales in the summer. It's really hit or miss. Either you find a box filled with games or nothing.

There's a chain called Half Price Books (http://www.halfpricebooks.com/) that sells old games too, I've found a ton of classics there in the past year.

I'll also hit thrift stores from time to time. The games there are usually in horrible condition though.

I usually go searching for classics games in my local Cash Converters store they have a lot of games for the original NES, Super NES and original Playstation. Also sometimes I check out Game Traders although they specialise in anime and modern games more they do have quite a few classics that people have sold too them (I purchased the original Phantasy Star from Game Traders :) ). However their prices will quickly chew holes in your wallet.

I mainly rely on Ebay. My entire Dreamcast and most of my Atari Jaguar collections came from various sellers there and I still browse there for various classic items.
