Banning Barbie

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Fri Mar 6, '09, 12:17 am

Is this fellow who wants to ban all Barbie dolls just being silly, stupid, or what? And, he's a Senator to boot! Well, I may have just answered my own question, there.

Really, though, what harm is/has Barbie done to anyone??????

As far as making people think you only have to be beautiful and not smart, that is just a lot of BS! Barbie has been a race car driver, an astronaut, a teacher, a President of the US, and more .... and you have to be smart to be all those things.

Happy 50th Birthday to Barbie on March 9. :cake: You go girl!!!!!!! You rule!! :proposetoast:

I appreciate the guy's concern for women and the pressure to be beautiful; but he's just being too sensitive. It's like you said Silver_Surfer; it's not like they want Barbie to come off as terribly stupid. In fact, I think that there was a teacher version of Barbie long ago. XD She came with a couple of students, iirc.

Wow...just....wow. I appreciate concern here, as yes, Barbie is a tad unrealistic in terms of female body proportions, but generally, trying to BAN something for that kind of reason is going too far. I would girls would be a bit smarter than that and realize it's a toy. Once again...I think sometimes, kids are way more in touch with the fact that the pretend world and the real world are different than adults are. I never played with any Barbie dolls (I'm a tomboy :p ) but still...

What amazes me is the bit at the end of the article, where it says some place actually went through with a ban like this. While being concerned about children is good, there are many more pressing issues that the lawmakers could be addressing with the time and money they're wasting on this nonsense.

Lol they say Barbie is bad but what about swim suit models and models in general? Should we ban them? Of course we won't but it's easy to get mad at a piece of plastic. Morons I tell you, Morons.

I remember that I had about 50 Barbie dolls when I was a kid. :D The ban seems a little silly; I know kids are easily influenced, but I don't think that having a pretty fashion doll is going to brainwash them into thinking that girls have to be stupid and pretty.

There are a couple of girl GI Joe figures, right? They'll probably say those are teaching kids that only girls with guns are cool.
