Dome Houses

Postby Thoul » Fri Apr 13, '07, 2:42 pm

This morning I saw a story on the local news about a guy that is building a dome house to live in. It's about the same as a regular house (three bedrooms and two baths, IIRC), just with domes for ceilings instead of a flat plane. It made me think of the dome houses in Phantasy Star I.

What do you think, would you like to live in a house like this?

Sounds pretty neat to me. Yeah, I'd give it a try.

Some of these house builders / designers have pretty far out ideas. I've seen programs about houses built with used tires, cans, and various other things to help the environment, etc., so this idea with the ceilings doesn't seem that too far outlandish.

I think it would be pretty strange. I guess I'm just too used to a normal, 'flat" ceiling. Having a round one would be kind of odd. I like to hang pictures and stuff on my walls. If they were curved for the dome, I don't know if I could do that any more.

I always find it interesting to see how fiction inspires advancements in real life. Star Trek inspired a lot of scientific discoveries and technology designs over the last few years. Maybe these dome houses were inspired by PS1. :)

Well why not? I know I'd be content with a small dome shaped house. I'd maybe have to think about the paintjob though. :D

Well it's a choice between bright blue or orange. Though if you want to annoy the neighbours, luminous green would do fine. ;)

Oh but keep the walls nice and flat. Curved walls would make for weird living spaces. :p A dome tent can be bad enough if it's the wrong size.

A dome house is ok, thinking about modern architecture, since round shapes are considered very modern. It is not so practical, though, since you'd have many "lost spaces" and planning illumination of a room would not be so easy with a round wall/ceiling.
A person only sees and hears what he wants to see and hear and disregards the rest.
